The first thing you should do is bring all your houseplant indoors. If you are like me, you take your houseplants out of the house in the spring and put them in the garden for the summer and early fall months. I find that my houseplants do really well outside. So well in fact, that they grow to be twice the size they were when they first went outside. Before you bring your plants in it's a good idea to hose them down to get rid of any insects that may have taken up residence on the leaves of the plants or in the soil. If you find any plants with severe infestations discard them to avoid infesting other plants in your house. Any plants that have grown too big for their pots can be repotted.
Always empty all containers of their soil and store them in the garage or shed. Pots that are left outside with soil in them may crack, especially clay or china pots. I usually make a pile of soil and plants from my pots in a corner of the garden and in the spring use this as top dressing for my flower beds. I chop all the leaves from my lawn and gardens up with the lawnmower and add them to this pile. This is a great way to make use of all your garden waste and saves you bagging up your leaves.

Any garden furniture or garden accessories should be cleaned and stored in the garage. I walk around my garden and collect up all my garden ornaments and put them in one area on the deck. I hose them down, allow them to dry thoroughly and then put them away until the spring. You can use any type of storage you like for storing these items. I prefer to store my garden chair cushions in storage bins in the basement, and all other items I store in bins on wire shelving in my garage.
Once you have finished cleaning the lawns and gardens of all debris, clean all garden tools and store them away in the garden shed or garage. Tools that are left out in the winter will rust and the handles will rot. The lawn mower blade should also be cleaned to keep it from rusting over the winter. Any stubborn dirt and rust can be removed with oil if necessary and make sure to let your small tools like trowels and clippers dry properly before storing them in bins for the winter to avoid rust developing.
Cleaning your garden properly in the fall will give you piece of mind for the winter and help to ensure that you don't have problems in the spring. Once the cleaning is done all there is left to do is dream of what you are going to plant next spring!
